SCALA Live @ The Wheaty

1. Paula Standing

Originality is not always finding something new to look at, often it’s finding a new way to look at the things we see everyday. Informed and impacted by the musical and personal influences on her life, Paula Standing blends these elements into a musical style that comfortably borrows inspiration from a number of sources yet strongly retains a feel that is very much her own.

There are elements of folk with sweet slices of Joni Mitchell and her childhood heroes, Simon and Garfunkel. Then to add some spice to the whole mixture there is the classically trained soprano voice blending it all together into a wonderful rich mixture.

Immersed in a sea of live music created during her family’s regular ‘front parlour’ sessions, Paula Standing continues to be impacted by the musical and personal influences in her life.

Gritty tales of truth, with a spattering of murder ballads, cloaked in an innocent country rock sound like a Linda Ronstadt and Stevie Nicks love child, luring us into a false sense of security as we become the voyeurs and she becomes the story. All else becomes silent.

Whether in the desert outback or beside the surf beaches of Australia’s substantial coastline, Paula is an established favourite amongst the Australian contemporary indie roots scene, where wry humour and warmth are as much a part of the show as her impressive vocal range and guitar combo.

2. Emma Jayne

With her dulcet tones and songs from the heart, Emma Jayne is the true essence of a singer-songwriter. Compared to the likes of Sara Bareilles and Carrie Underwood, Emma seamlessly blends folk with her own brand of Aussie pop that oozes authenticity.

After being hard at work in the studio, Emma Jayne has recently launched her much-anticipated EP “I Don’t Want To Talk”. This project features tracks including ‘Hometown’, a tribute to her small-town upbringing and “‘Til The Next Love”, a duet with rising country superstar Matt James. This EP is a culmination of Emma’s country and folk roots beautifully entwined with her more recent pop influences.

Immerse yourself in Emma’s songbook as she invites you to lean in a little bit closer.
