This year, where adventures to far lands happen just in our imagination, come and hear Fire Songs, Jodie O’Regan’s new chamber work. Let the music transport you to the world of mythic ancient Ireland.
Fire Songs is the story of Brigid – Fire Goddess of Ireland. It is drawn from ancient legends and epic poems transcribed in Ireland a thousand years ago and inspired by the magic of Celtic folksongs. O’Regan composed the work for two of South Australia’s most loved singers, soprano Bethany Hill in the role of Brigid and Celtic singer Emma Horwood as a Bard who weaves narration through the piece with voice and harp.
Originally conceived as an acapella song cycle which Bethany has toured interstate and overseas, this year Fire Songs comes home to Adelaide. Presented for the first time as a piece for chamber ensemble, featuring cellist Rachel Bruerville, handbell ringer Ali O’Connell and Kerryn Schofield on folk and period wind instruments.
Performed in the acoustic of Pilgrim Uniting Church on 4th of October over two evening sessions – 5pm and 7pm, the program will begin with a pre-concert talk by Jodie on the work’s creation.
